Welcome to Reception (Foundation Stage 2)

.

PE Days

Tuesday and Thursday

Please ensure that your child comes in appropriate clothing on these days including suitable footwear e.g. trainers.

Change of reading books/ library visit

Your child will bring home a reading folder with a reading record inside. On a Monday and Thursday they will change both their library book and their phase reading book.

Home Learning

Your child will be given phonics sounds to practise once these have been taught in class. These will go home on Friday.

Occasionally, we will ask for some Home Learning activities to be completed linked to our Learning Journey. These will be optional and a way of celebrating what the children have learnt / what they already know.

Enrichment

Children in Reception enjoy seasonal walks exploring the local area – these happen each term.

Each Wednesday, we have outdoor learning. These days equip them with a variety of skills from enquiry based to fire building and teamwork. Along side this, core values such as resilience, independence and cooperation are practiced.

We embed our Summer learning journey with a visit to a local farm. This visit allows the children to further delve into the origins of their food, as well as learn about how to look after farm animals. The children enjoy feeding and handling certain animals too!

Parent Hub

On a weekly basis you will receive a Parent Hub notification which provides you with a snap shot of learning from our week in Reception!

Reading

We teach phonics using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme.  We teach stand alone discrete lessons to the children daily to build on their decoding, segmenting and blending skills to develop their ability of reading. Please visit their website for more information.

You will be sent home a reading book, phonics book and some tricky words. Please try to  practise the following as often as you can:

  • Reading book – this book is for practise and should be relatively easy for your child to read in order to build fluency. This is to help build the child’s confidence of being a reader.
  • Phonics book – to practise letters and sounds learned so far, these link the learning that we do in class.
  • Tricky word lists – to practise common words that are not phonetically decodable.  We read these as whole words.
