Please ensure that your child comes in appropriate clothing on these days including suitable footwear e.g. trainers.

Change of reading books / library visit

Your child will bring home a colour-banded reading book at an appropriate level for them to practice reading fluently.  These can be changed at any time – your child can just go to the bookshelves and swap them over whenever they are ready to.

Our library afternoon is Thursday, when children can borrow a school library book to read for pleasure at home.

Homework

Home work will be handed out on a Friday. This normally comprises the spelling word lists and a times tables practice sheet.

Enrichment

We visit Old Hay Brook twice during Y4, once to conduct some geographical fieldwork in October, and then again in the summer term to test our outdoor learning skills by making and floating mini-rafts.  We also have multiple other opportunities for Outdoor Learning lessons and days throughout the year.

This year Y4 will be visiting the Crucible Theatre to watch 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe' in October.  We will use this experience to support our writing unit in November.

During November and December, Y4 partakes in the UDOIT Dance Festival, being coached by dance teachers to learn a street dance routine.  We then perform this to parents and other school as part of the festival, at the Canon Medical Arena.

In December we enjoy a Winter day hike up and around the hills and moors of Totley Bents and Blacka Moor, then as part of our History and Geography studies trek along the Houndkirk Road and into Burbage Valley in June.

There are multiple opportunities for children to partake in school sport during Y4.  In recent years these have included: football, cricket, swimming, basketball, hockey, triathlon, UDOIT dance, dodgeball, a showcase event for different sports, and the Wileman Cup intra-school football competition.  Based on the number of opportunities available in any given year, we aim to give every child the chance to represent school at least once during Y4.

Y4s also get to participate in their first school residential, via a two-night stay to the Oakes Holiday Centre at Norton.  The care and support of the staff there helps every child to have an enjoyable experience away from home with their friends.

Parent Hub

On a weekly basis you will receive a Parent Hub notification which provides you with a snapshot of learning from our week in Y4, along with any reminders about upcoming events.
