Welcome to Year 5

PE Days

In Y5, our PE days are Monday and Wednesday.

Please ensure that your child comes in appropriate clothing on these days including suitable footwear e.g. trainers.

Change of reading books/library visit

Your child will bring home a reading folder with a reading record inside. On Wednesdays the children will change both their library book and their coloured reading book.

Homework

On Fridays, the children will be given a spelling sheet with the week’s spellings and some tasks to do to practise them. The children will be tested on these the following Friday. If your child has a sheet with some words highlighted, then they will be tested on the highlighted words on the following Monday.

Children also have access to a variety of online learning platforms. We encourage the Y5s to use these at home. Your child’s class teacher will speak to you if they feel this extra practise would be especially important.

IDL – reading and spelling support.

Spelling Shed – weekly spelling practise and catch-up lists.

Times-Table Rockstar – times tables practise.

Enrichment

In Y5, the children will have many opportunities to enrich their learning through activities in school as well as trips and visits.

In the Autumn term, the children will explore the solar system when the Astrodome planetarium visits school. Later in the term, we go on a hike around the surrounding countryside to follow the border of two Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. The children will also take part in various outdoor learning opportunities: cooking on fires and building shelters like Anglo-Saxon settlers did.

In March of the Spring term, we will visit Castleton on our residential. As well as taking part in adventurous activities and going on a hike, we will be learning about the community of Castleton and its surrounding area. After this, we will visit another community in Sheffield to think about the similarities and differences of these.

In Summer, we will be growing vegetables and herbs in the vegetable garden in order to use this produce in our summer cooking project. We will also be visiting Yorkshire Sculpture Park as part of our Art Learning.

There are multiple opportunities for children to partake in school sport during Y5.  In recent years these have included: cricket, climbing, basketball, tag-rugby, orienteering, and the Wileman Cup intra-school football competition.  Based on the number of opportunities available in any given year, we aim to give every child the chance to represent school at least once during Y5

Parent Hub

On a weekly basis you will receive a Parent Hub notification which provides you with a snap

shot of learning from our week in Y5!
